School Chaplain

What’s been happening?
Once a year we have the Gideon’s Bible volunteers visit to present Bibles to the young people. Their visit creates lots of interest in accessing the chaplaincy program and many students  ask for Bibles.
I do Bible Studies with the young people, and once a month we have volunteers from the community churches and other members of the community to help with the Bible Study and talk about what the Bible says about their situations.
We also have a number of new volunteers, who come in each week to work individually with the young people. I get to connect these volunteers to specific students who are in need of support, and they provide support and build rapport and networks for the future.
STRENGTH and SHINE programs are run within the centre; they are designed for boys and girls respectively. The programs engage students and encourage them to grow in their self-worth and decision making. It is a privilege to be able to watch their growth through these programs.
What do I do as Chaplain?
I facilitate the Strength Program twice a week where we learn about significance, resilience and courage. We have seven students doing the strength program for eight weeks at a time. Many young people attend the program weekly, and many have graduated.
I oversee a group of volunteers from YWAM who come in to administer the Shine Program with the female students. These YWAMers are building great rapport with the students, and the students are growing in their self-identity.
Pastoral Care is a vital part of my role in the centre. I spend time individually with the young people to discuss areas the young person wants to improve in their behaviour and thinking; challenges they are facing and areas they want to overcome.
Each Tuesday and Thursday  morning I facilitate a Bible Study with each young person who has received a Bible and expressed an interest to do the study with me.  This is another opportunity for young people to ask questions, discuss and pray together.

How can you get involved as a Volunteer!
At my school, the Cleveland Education& Training Centre, we are always looking for volunteers and there are many opportunities to help out. These include assisting with the Strength Program for boys or the Shine Program for girls; The reading program or Bible Studies with young people who have expressed interest.
To be a volunteer here at the centre you have to have a Blue Card and attend a day’s training about our policies within the centre.
If you are interested, feel free to contact me, and I can organise
a visit. We would love to have you come and check out what the Chaplain is doing in the life of young people at Cleveland Education &Training Centre.
Thank You for reading Chappy News.
I really appreciate the support shown to Chaplaincy and the Cleveland Education &Training Centre.
